Community Session: Looking After your Heart and Bowel Health

Thursday, 10 December 2026 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

You’re Invited: Looking After Your Heart and Bowel Health

Looking after your health as you age includes knowing your risks, taking simple preventative steps, and making the most of screening that can help identify problems early.

Join us for an informative and practical session with two experienced health educators, focusing on two important areas of our health: our heart and bowel.

Natasha from the Heart Foundation will talk about heart disease, the factors that can increase our risk, and practical steps we can take to support better heart health for ourselves and our whānau.

Dana from the National Bowel Screening Programme will explain how the free bowel screening programme works for eligible New Zealanders aged 60 to 74, what to expect when completing the test, and why regular screening is important even when you feel well. She will also cover what options are available once you are over 74.

What we’ll cover:

✓ What heart disease is and how it can affect your health
✓ Understanding the key risk factors for heart disease
✓ Practical ways to help manage your heart health
✓ How the National Bowel Screening Programme works

✓ Why bowel screening and early detection matter
✓ Signs and symptoms to be aware of
✓ What you need to know about bowel health and screening after age 74

Requests for bowel screening kits can be made on the day.

Come along, learn more about your health, ask questions, and leave with practical information to help you make informed choices about looking after yourself.
